ICT 2016 Unit 037: Divergence Phantoms
Review classic and hidden divergence as conditional evidence that needs price location, liquidity and later response.
Divergence compares price with an indicator or related market whose behavior does not fully agree. It can be a useful question about momentum and liquidity, but it is not an automatic reversal answer. The chart still needs location, structure and a later response.
Compare before interpreting
Record the price swing, the comparison series, the timeframe and the exact mismatch. Classic divergence and hidden divergence describe different relationships; neither one proves that a reversal must follow.
Planned diagram position: after ## Compare before interpreting and before ## The phantom reversal problem.

Divergence gains meaning only when price and context respond together.
The phantom reversal problem
A market can continue while divergence remains visible. A trader who treats the mismatch as a command may stand against a still-accepted path. Keep the divergence as a hypothesis and watch whether price changes structure, reaches liquidity or simply absorbs the warning.
Add context and counterexamples
Check range location, nearby pools, higher-timeframe direction and the quality of the comparison series. Then collect a counterexample where divergence persisted without a durable turn. This protects the review from selecting only dramatic reversals.
Two instruments at a fork
Imagine two instruments travelling through related terrain. One turns while the other continues, creating a mismatch worth investigating. The mismatch does not reveal which route is correct; location, liquidity and later structure decide how much weight it deserves.
Misconceptions: classic divergence is not an automatic reversal; hidden divergence is not guaranteed continuation; a comparison series does not reveal intent.
Review exercise
Find one classic and one hidden divergence from completed charts. For each, write the observable mismatch, two competing explanations and the later response. Mark what remained unknown about participant intent.
Short review
1. Divergence persists while price structure holds. Sample reasoning: keep the mismatch visible but unresolved because no structural response followed.
2. Price reaches liquidity and changes structure. Sample reasoning: compare location and change with divergence as one observation, not the cause.
Learning boundary
Divergence does not provide automatic entries, stops, targets, probabilities or proof of a trap. Continue to the broader ICT / SMC Learning Path after comparing momentum evidence with price and liquidity context.
Review questions
- What exactly diverged, over which timeframe?
- Did price structure change after the mismatch?
- What liquidity and location context supported or weakened the reading?
- Which counterexample prevents treating divergence as a reversal rule?
